UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

Format: THIMUN
Topic: Recognizing, resettling and aiding climate refugees

UNHCR is the UN agency responsible for protecting refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people, and assist in their voluntary repatration, local integration or resettlement to a third country.

‘Those least responsible for climate change are among the most affected.’ Climate refugees are people who have been forced to leave their homes due to natural or environmental factors, including but not limited to rising sea levels and extreme weather disasters. The concept of climate refugees is a relatively new one, yet it calls for increasing attention as environmental damage continues without hindrance. As of now, climate refugees are offered little to none recognition, protection or assistance. What can countries do with the mandate of the UNHCR to solve this issue? The novelty of the issue will require delegates to think creatively in order to identify appropriate solutions. This council brings together the issues of climate change and refugee rights, and provides delegates with an opportunity to approach environmental issues through the lens of its real life impact on human lives. Recommended for delegates looking to explore new concepts and ready for a challenge.
